Actually GC, Daylight Savings Time was first mentioned in 1784 by Benjamin Franklin to the editors of the Journal of Paris in response to a satirical article. But it was actually first instituted in the United States in 1918 and then reinstated in 1942 as a wartime measure to conserve resources. But the idea of spending more money during one's waking hours is a completely viable idea.

because someone figured out- we spend more money when there are MORE hours in the day... ( waking hours that is)
